There is compelling evidence that education in the arts is crucial to the development of the human personality.  We believe that every school curriculum should include arts experiences.  Further, we believe that such educational programming will be crucial to Blackbird Theatre’s ultimate success in building an audience and in training theatre artists for work in the classics.

In support of these objectives and of the broader goals of arts education, we plan a variety of initiatives.  Our next, in conjunction with our fall 2006 production of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, is a collaboration with the Vancouver Playhouse Summer Youth Intensive aimed at developing an interest in the classics and in the techniques and skills that classical acting requires.

The Ibsen Project will bring a group of high school students together as a “shadow cast” for Blackbird’s upcoming production of Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.  In addition to receiving expert training from the instructors at the Youth Intensive, led by Sandra Ferens, the young actors will receive individual coaching by the outstanding professionals cast in the same roles in Ibsen's Peer Gynt. Their scenes will be presented on the set at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre.
